mama mia! here we go again!

news is out! mamma mia is coming back to broadway this summer and i am over the moon! the ultimate rom-con mediterranean musical, the show that taught us that platform boots and overalls belong together and made us fall in love with meryl streep once again is coming back with a bang!

so here’s a more news based article of what we know so far — plus, of course, my completely unsolicited (but very passionate) opinions.

okay so let’s do a quick rewind — mamma mia! originally hit broadway back in 2001, bringing abba’s greatest hits to life through the chaotic, love-filled, feel good story of sophie, donna, and their wild little greek island wedding adventure. featuring 22 abba songs stitched together, this musical performance 5,773 performances making it the ninth longest running show in broadway history. ultimatley, it ran for 14 years (!!!) before closing in 2015. and now, a whole decade later, we’re getting the comeback we deserve!

for me and so many others this musical is all about leaning into the joy of everything, singing even if you’re off key, and embracing the messiness of love, friendship, and family.

part of what made mamma mia! so spectacular was the beautifully casted individuals of the musical and movie. i mean seriously, i will never get over meryl streep singing ‘the winner takes it all.’ so i am a little sad that they will not be coming back for this re-run but don’t you worry because i do have a dream cast!

donna - meryl streep : i genuinely i don’t think there is someone who can top her. she is the ultimate donna sheridan and if she wants the role, she’ll get it.

sophie - dove cameron : she’s got the pipes, the disney roots, and the perfect mix of sweet & spicy!

tanya - jennifer coolidge : do i need to say more?

rosie - melissa mccarthy : i feel like rosie and sookie st. james share a soul.

this isn’t the first time a mamma mia! return has been teased. there were rumors of a limited engagment pre-pandemic, but plans fizzled when the industry shut down. now, with the 25th anniversary as a perfect excuse, the creatice team, led by producer judy craymer, decided to bring it back! The 2025 production is also expected to get a slight visual refresh, with a new design team giving the set and costumes a subtle glow-up. But fear not—the iconic looks (the Dynamos’ jumpsuits, Sophie’s wedding dress, Tanya’s poolside glam) are all expected to remain intact.

in the end, this musical is what has brought so many together. this revival is a love letter to everyone who grew up watching the moving, who fell in love with abba because of this show, and believes in the magic of love and summer.

i can’t wait to see you all on broadway!
